Superlatives cost nothing to print. Licensing, clear quotes and real reviews tell you far more.
Slogans are not evidence
Almost every locksmith calls itself the top choice. Those claims are marketing. What matters is how the business behaves when you call and when the technician arrives.
Professional from the first call
A trustworthy locksmith answers clearly, asks about your lock and location, gives a price range before dispatch and an honest arrival estimate. On site, the technician should carry ID, explain costs before starting and never push upgrades you do not need.
Check the licence
In California, locksmith companies must be licensed by the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Ask for the licence number and check it on the BSIS website. Membership of a trade body such as ALOA and liability insurance are further good signs.
Look at genuine reviews
Verified reviews on Google, Yelp or the BBB, and recommendations from neighbors, say more than any website slogan. Look for consistent comments about pricing and behavior, not just star counts.
Red flags
Be wary of a generic business name with no local presence, a price that seems far too low, a refusal to quote, an unmarked vehicle, a technician without ID, or pressure to drill and replace a lock that could be opened or rekeyed.
Why local matters
A locksmith based in your area depends on local word of mouth. That gives them a strong reason to quote fairly and do the job right. Learn more about our Van Nuys team.
